NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT)

Detect defects. Verify integrity. Keep assets operating.

Advanced Non-Destructive Testing & Inspection for Heavy Industry

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) provides accurate inspection of critical assets without damaging the material or interrupting operations.

IMIS delivers NDT services across Australia to support shutdowns, routine maintenance, fabrication, commissioning and asset integrity programs.

Inspection services are available for pressure vessels, storage tanks, piping systems, structural steel, process plant, boilers, heat exchangers and other critical infrastructure.

NDT Services We Offer

  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT) uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws, measure material thickness and assess the integrity of components without causing damage. UT is widely used for inspecting pressure vessels, piping, structural steel and fabricated equipment during maintenance, shutdowns and new construction.

  • Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced ultrasonic inspection method that produces detailed cross-sectional images of welds and materials. It is commonly used for weld inspection, corrosion mapping and defect sizing where greater accuracy, coverage and reporting are required.

  • Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) is a highly accurate ultrasonic technique used to detect, size and monitor cracks within welded components. It provides reliable data for critical weld inspections and is widely applied to pressure equipment, pipelines and structural assets.

  • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) detects surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials using magnetic fields and fine inspection particles. It is commonly used for welds, structural steel, pressure equipment and fabricated components where early crack detection is essential.

  • Dye Penetrant Testing (PT) is used to reveal surface-breaking defects that are not visible to the naked eye. Suitable for both ferrous and non-ferrous materials, PT is widely used on welds, castings, machined components and fabricated parts during fabrication and maintenance activities.

  • Visual Testing (VT) is the first step in many inspection programs, providing a practical assessment of the condition of assets, welds and structural components. Inspections identify visible defects, corrosion, damage and workmanship issues before further testing methods are applied.

  • Eddy Current Testing (ECT) uses electromagnetic induction to detect surface and near-surface defects, material degradation and conductivity changes without direct contact. It is commonly applied to heat exchanger tubes, aircraft components, piping and non-ferrous materials where rapid inspection is required.

  • Positive Material Identification (PMI) verifies the chemical composition of metals and alloys to ensure materials meet project specifications and industry standards. PMI is commonly performed on piping systems, pressure equipment and critical process components to prevent material mix-ups and ensure compliance.

  • Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM) accurately measures remaining wall thickness without requiring access to both sides of the component. It is widely used to monitor corrosion, erosion and material loss in tanks, pressure vessels, piping and process equipment as part of asset integrity programs.

  • Hardness Testing measures the resistance of a material to indentation, providing valuable information about its mechanical properties, heat treatment and overall condition. It is commonly used during fabrication, welding, maintenance and failure investigations to verify material performance and compliance with specifications.

Industry Applications

  • Maintain the reliability of heavy equipment, fixed plant and processing assets through inspection programs that reduce unplanned downtime and support shutdown maintenance.

  • Protect pressure equipment, pipelines and processing facilities through inspection services that support safety, compliance and continued operation.

  • Maintain the integrity of LNG assets with specialist inspection services for pressure systems, piping and critical process equipment.

  • Reduce production interruptions through preventative inspection and maintenance of machinery, structural assets and plant equipment.

  • Support planned outages and ongoing maintenance with inspection services for boilers, turbines, pressure equipment and balance-of-plant assets.

  • Protect marine infrastructure, bulk handling equipment, conveyors and cranes operating in harsh coastal environments.

  • Assess the condition of structural steel, bridges, industrial facilities and public assets to support safe operation and long-term performance.

  • Provide inspection and asset integrity services that help maintain critical infrastructure, operational equipment and defence facilities.

  • Inspect mining, construction and industrial heavy equipment to identify wear, fatigue and structural defects before they impact productivity.
